When accelerating, we avoid exceeding 200 amps to prolong battery life. This limits our acceleration.
When the voltage drops to 105 when pulling 70 amps, that indicates we are at 20% of battery capacity and consider this "empty" and time for refueling. This action also prolongs battery life.
System Voltage120 Volts
ChargerBycan
Heater120 VDC electric heater can defrost windshield, but it is a cold van in winter
Top SpeedWe generally operate in 2nd gear (Nissan 1985 pickup manual transmission)for most driving, and reverse to back up. Being the clutch peddle is not installed, I carefully speed-shift into 3rd gear on the highway to get it up to 100 km/h. With a hind wind or decline, it does go a bit faster. Any hill or headwind will decrease our speed to 80 km/h.
Accelerationslow, but faster than heavy trucks
Range64 Miles (102 Kilometers)
on new batteries
Watt Hours/Mile2003, first operating year: Price (with tax) is about $0.07 per kWh

Cost per km =
Seating Capacity5 adults
Conversion Time1 year
Conversion Costabout $13,000 Canadian, excluding the van and batteries
Additional FeaturesThe insulated battery boxes make it more reliable than gas vehicles in winter.

It can't stall at lights

Doesn't leak oil on driveways

Doesn't use energy when stopped in traffic jams
September 22, 2006 is our 4th year anniversary with 26,037 km total. It is sad that few people take note that we are all electric. Sadder, is that increased interest correlates only with the price of gas. The upside of slow acceleration is that people get to read the stickers. Seeing Kyoto Electric reminds me of the story of an Amish riding his horse and wagon down a highway. On the back is marked:
“Sorry I’m Slow
LOW EMISSIONS VEHICLE
Warning: don’t step on the exhaust.”

As of December 15, 2006 we may need new batteries as these are more than 2 years old and our range is dropping fast now.

20 batteries @ $100 each = $2,000.

Back in 2001, my daughter Laurel was 15 years old. She helped extract the engine from the Mazda MPV. My son Tim (13 at the time) worked on lining up the mounts for the electric motor and batteries and helped to do the wiring system.

REV Consultants in Ottawa was instrumental in suppling materials and invaluable guidance. Find them in my link pages WWW.ecoBUGdoctor.com

“My wife thought I was a nut, she thought I was throwing $15,000 into a black hole.” “Now, she is in love with the Kyoto Electric Van.

We are looking forward to better battery technology so we can incorporate the Kyoto Electric into a full service vehicle for our ecological pest control franchise system.
